My favorite Comedian: now and forever Steven Colbert. His Olympic spoofs were hilarious! He also brought an entirely new fan base to Olympic sport and the Olympic Games.
My favorite athlete moments at 4:00 am: those taking place on the Today Show set. Almost everyone dealt with the 2:45 am pick-up times without complaint!
My favorite wall at USA House: the Opening Ceremony mural.
My favorite USA House hostess: my friend Mandy welcoming in the guests and turning away the strangers. Check out the face on the Canadian woman!
My favorite Canadian pastime: totem pole whittling!
My favorite U.S. athlete: Katherine Reutter. She won bronze in the team relay, then silver in the 1,000m. She is silly and humble and grateful and unbelievably passionate about Team USA. She’s the one kneeling, and all of the 3s stand for third place!
My favorite interns of all-time: Nick and Vanessa. They interned from June to December 2009, and then joined us for the Olympics.
My favorite intern’s favorite Olympic task: updating the U.S. medalist wall at our press workroom in USA House!
My favorite sponsor activation: Visa’s Go World. Visa sponsors about a dozen U.S. athletes and makes them into a tight-knit little family. Visa provides financial assistance whether it’s an Olympic year or not, evoking a tremendous amount of loyalty and appreciation from their athletes. And they tell the compelling stories of their athletes better than any other sponsor I’ve worked with. This was from a press conference they hosted toward the end of the Games.
My favorite little guy: snowboarder Louie Vito. He was always up for photos and autographs and had an endless smile on his face.
My favorite nickname: Skip Lindsay. Ha! I spent some time with these four members of the women’s curling team, along with “coach” Mark (luge athlete and Opening Ceremony Flag Bearer Mark Grimette). They did some interviews for me at USA House when their skip Debbie McCormick wasn’t able to join.
My favorite athlete encounter: figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi and this guest from Microsoft, one of our U.S. Team licensees. He was so speechless and kept blushing – quite the fan!
My favorite place to people watch: Club Bud. An invite-only club designed just for the Games.
My favorite athletes to run into at Club Bud: Katherine Reutter and the women’s short track speedskaters. Don’t let Katherine (middle) fool you in this photo because she is the farthest thing from a diva you can imagine. In fact, she told me that she is donating all of her winnings from her Olympic medals (the USOC awards $10,000 for a bronze, $15,000 for a silver and $25,000 for a gold, so she netted $25,000) she is giving to her parents to fix their old house.
My favorite rendition of “Oh Canada:” after the men’s gold medal hockey game.
My favorite Olympic Main Press Center: Canada Place at the Vancouver Games. When else can you work right on the water and see sea planes touching down as you’re running to a press conference?
My favorite winter Olympic sport to see live: short track speedskating. It is on-the-edge of your seat excitement the entire race!
My favorite part of the Closing Ceremony: the opening spoof when they finally lifted up the fourth arm of the Olympic Cauldron, which malfunctioned during the Opening Ceremony. A great touch of humor!
My favorite Vancouver destination: The Capilano Suspension Bridge. This getaway is eco-adventure meets Swiss Family Robinson, just 30 minutes outside of the city! The Capilano Bridge itself was first built in 1889 and has a rich history. It stretches 450 feet long and is 230 feet above the Capilano River!
The park also has a treetops adventure, where swaying footbridges take you through the evergreens up to 100 feet off the forest floor. It was breathtaking and peaceful. You felt like you could live in this little village-in-the-trees!
